Honestly, I don’t know what to say. I don’t belong to this community, but I have some really cool friends from here – fictional and in real life. And I just…I guess I just want to you know that I support you guys! Never change who you are, never stop all that awesomeness, and just keep being you!

I am not sure how things are in other places, but in my country I know that it’s really brutal. Only a few years ago, it was made legal, and even then when queer couples want to get married, their parents take cases to the court and their argument is that – it goes against their holy scriptures. I mean no comments on that, because I don’t want pious people to come attack me now. But just know that, it’s those same religious scriptures which say that everyone is made for a reason, everything happens for a reason. So, there you go.

And I am really grateful to this book community and all the #ownvoices authors for coming out and telling stories to the whole world, because for me – I found out the meaning of gay when I was in standard seven or eight, and that too because students in my class bullied this certain boy. And I didn’t really get the meaning. My parents don’t talk about it, no one actively talks about it, trans people in our country are made fun of. They don’t get jobs, they are thrown out, considered an abomination, and they have to live off of pennies that people donate on roadsides.

And it’s really annoying when you support LGBTQ+ rights, and people give you weird judgy looks and ask you, “why? are you one of them?” I mean gods above, something is wrong with these people. Not that I would mind being queer, but seriously. I mean, I support animal rights too. Do I look like a fucking sparrow to you?!

It wasn’t until I started watching booktube, later that same year and then stumbled across bookstagram, and read more diverse books did I come to know of it. So, I educated myself and I found out that people are not just limited to she or him.

We have so many different kinds of people, all living in the same place. And I think that’s really exciting! I mean who says that human civilization is boring, huh?

People discover themselves each day, find a little bit about themselves each day, so as fellow humans, we should have it in ourselves to let them grow, let ourselves grow, and just be.

And isn’t it a wonderful thought? That we are not limited to liking a certain gender, or adopting a certain gender. We can be anything and everything.

We are limitless.

I wrote that. ๐Ÿ˜ That’s me smiling goofily, because I wasn’t sure what this post was gonna be like, but I guess it turned out well. ๐Ÿ˜ I am felling happy. ๐ŸŒˆ I have another post sitting in my draft, with a list of few of the LGBTQ+ books on my TBR, and I had planned to post this with it, but I figured this deserved all the attention. ๐ŸŒธ

So, what are your thoughts on this? Have you ever faced any struggles? Maybe you could share in the comments below, if you are comfortable! and once again – happy pride month! I really hope that I didn’t offend anyone with my thoughts, please let me know, and I will rectify it.

*also, your “offense” will not be not be considered if you are homophobic or heterosexist* ๐Ÿ˜ถ

  1. I agree to every point said there. The whole ‘Vedon ke khilaaf’ thing infuriates me coz those people haven’t even read the holy scriptures they sooo wanna follow. Hypocrisy is on an another level in India.
And yes even I don’t belong to this community but we are the ones who are gonna support them coz they aren’t ‘abnormal’โœŠโœŠ

  2. Ahh thank god. I was soo nervous while posting this. And I was like just do it just do it. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜… Because I know that religion is a sensitive topic and I would have almost deleted this post had you not commented ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… thankx a lot ak!!! For agreeing and reading โค๏ธ๐Ÿฅฐ and it’s about time this hypocrisy ends (sighs)

  4. Ahh thank you for this!! In my country this isn’t talked about AT ALL and it seriously pisses me out. I mean, homophobia is on another level, it’s normalised to a degree it’s horrendous. My family is very religious so I don’t mention this topic at all at home cuz it’s such a taboo and that one time my sis dropped in a word my parents acted clueless lol…and then I’m being jealous of people in more accepting countries๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

  5. And I am very glad someone spoke about it. Yes religion is sensitive but wrong needs to be shown as wrong
And Ash, I always read and agree to your posts and will continue to do so๐Ÿ’“

  6. You’re right, Akshita. I’m in total agreement. Posts like these have to be published. These people deserve a life too, one that doesn’t have too many compromises. Just because you support them doesn’t mean you’re one among them. Your point about being an animal rights supporter is spot on. I’m glad you didn’t delete this post. Akshita commented at the right time.

  7. Omg, that quote you wrote is #true ๐Ÿคฉ.
Dude, I love you so much for writing this post. Indeed conditions in our country regarding this community is just horrible. What’s worse is some people don’t even know that then when they offend these people, it’s actually wrong. They think it’s bad cuz they don’t even know anything about it, any of the movements that have taken place regarding it. I hope more people read your post and become aware of this situation.
Awesome post, I love you for writing it โคโค๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  8. A bold post. I’m fed up with people using our culture as an excuse for almost everything. I don’t mean any insult, but I think people are taking it too far and it’s just annoying. I remember my parents giving derisive looks at the poor television when they saw it is legalized. It’s time we grow out of these things.

  9. People are really backward even with all the new things and change in world. I can’t believe how mean and judgemental they can be. I also don’t want to start on religious thing as well because over the time, reading so much has changed my mind and belief. Now anyone ask me about my religion I say I believe in Bahรกสผรญ. Love this post!

  10. Awesome post! it’s like you just don’t mention LGBTQ+ related anything, unless you want to insult someone. And other than that, people do talk about it near me, but that’s very much limited, and no one ever brings it up, as if it’s some kind of taboo :/

  11. I generally don’t prefer reading books if it’s LGBTQ. Not because I have something against them. I just prefer straight books better. And actually, people around me, we are cool with this stuff. I have talked to my parents about this. Casually throwing this word. Like not in a bad way. But your points are sorta true too! I have seen them happen! And man! Great initiative, writing such a post. Shows there are sensible, humane humans here.

  13. thank you so much for this, ashmita, it was beautiful ๐Ÿ’• and youโ€™re so right about how the lgbtq+ community is treated in India ๐Ÿ˜ž I mean, looking at queer history of India, people didnโ€™t actually mind anyoneโ€™s sexuality or gender. It was after the aryans and colonial domination that people became so narrow-minded ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
    Tysm again ๐Ÿ’–

  14. Same here. It’s kinda infuriating. So, many people are unsupportive of this because they have been raised with that sort of opinion ingrained in their mind. And I have met soo many people who hate themselves for being themselves because they were taught that it’s bad and that it’s disgusting. It’s really sad. ๐Ÿ˜ž I am jealous too don’t worry. โค๏ธ Thank you for this lovely comment Jan ๐Ÿ’Œ

  17. This! Is! Exactly! What! I! Want! To! say!!!! I agree with everything you’ve written here! It just angers me how society discriminates against LGBTQ A+ community! I am a demisexual and no one other than my partner knows this. I’ve never told my parents in fear of being laughed at and them just rejecting it or thinking I might be wrong ๐Ÿ˜ซ. This post is written really beautifully, Ashmita and I cannot express enough thanks to you! ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’– I can’t wait for there to be a time when any such discrimination will cease to exist! Also, I want to educate myself on other identities of LGBTQ+ so I will be looking forward to your recommendations!! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’–

  21. Ahh so true! I can’t believe it either. I mean people should just let people be ๐Ÿ˜’ this is like ….in other words being nosy in a whole another level. ๐Ÿคฆ I am glad that reading has changed your mind! It has changed mine too!! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ And yes. It’s really bad when they are being judgemental and mean, because they don’t realise that their children might belong to the community and that it might make them hate themselves. And then for the rest of their life they will be fighting each other to hide their true self which is actually the best version of them! And that is such a cool answer! I usually try to avoid all questions on religion but I am keeping that answer in mind haha. If anyone pushed me I am definitely saying that from now on!!! Thank you soo much โค๏ธโœจ

Thank you soo much!! โค๏ธ Ohh I had never really thought about it from the historical perspective but that is such an interesting thing you told me! If that’s the case, then it’s outright hypocrisy ๐Ÿคฆ people say that the Colonial domination has made us advanced and though it was really bad, it has given us many advantages like railways etc etc. But that’s soo sad!!! Thanx again J!!(?) โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ

I am really very glad that atleast some people are still there who support it and they try to offend people who are against it or discriminate this community. To be honest , discrimination despite of gender is still very brutal. But I think it’s very necessary for the people to wake up and support them without any restriction. This way we can take our country to a betterment ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ.Thanks for sharing such a nice article…๐Ÿ’ฎ๐Ÿ’—

  28. People in our country get outraged when religion gets criticised. Same people don’t get outraged when a political leader calls for violence against a community.
